A Childhood Obession

A Childhood Obession

Dear Harold,

I was 10 years-old when I watched the first Pilot episode of Twin Peaks and fell in love with the characters; the owls, the theatrical red curtains (yes, I keep replicas in my living room as well) and the mysterious ambience.
However, the hand that dug out Laura’s necklace from the muddy ground frightened me. Fearful of what such haunting content might have on their impressionable child, my parents banned me from watching any further episodes. The mesmirization  would not cease however, and was even spurred on by the fact that as my mum would continue to brief me on the plots of each episode the day after each screening. The attraction of the forbidden; the ‘burnt’ child that seeks the fire…
It wasn’t until a decade later that I would watch the whole series in its entirety; in the meantime, I bought a half heart-necklace, which were popular at the time and I kept until I was 17 and able to share it with my one first ‘true’ love. I also discovered Lynch’s other works; Wild at Heart being a particular favourite. For my 30th, I held a Lynch themed birthday party at Santiago’s in Leeds.
Earlier this year, I forked out a smalelr fortune to learn the techniques of Trancendental Meditation – who inspired me? Mr David Lynch of course.
